I got one of those sit-stand desks at work!

I’m pretty excited. I work for an amazing company that really cares about employee wellness and happiness and I’m so lucky. That being said, many people at work have started to get those sit-stand desktop things. I requested one, and our CEO bought me and some of my colleagues the desktops. Today, they arrived.

The setup was pretty easy. Just take it out of the box and go, so I was up and running in no time. There are a few quirks, however, and I’m still working out a few kinks with it.

So the way it works is you put it on top of a regular desk, and then it’s pretty easy to adjust up and down as needed. A few kinks I had with it were that I still needed monitor stands to get the monitors at the correct height while keeping the keyboard comfortably low enough. No big deal. Another issue is there’s not much room for the mouse, but that’s a small issue to me. Also I have a giant ergonomic keyboard and it’s too big for the keyboard so I’ve ordered a smaller one which should arrive in a couple days. That’s where the negatives end. Now for the positives…

I love this thing!

Oh, it feels so amazing to be standing up at work. I’ve always felt so trapped in my chair for 8 hours a day and I’ve long worried about the negative impact it will have on my health. This is liberating! I got it in the afternoon so I only spent the last couple hours of work using it, but it felt soooo good to be out of my chair. I can already tell it’s going to be fantastic for my back and my legs which often get cramped sitting all day.

And now for some statistics…

I’ve been reading about the benefits of standing at work online and they are pretty great. Besides being helpful to people like me who have sitting related chronic pain issues (back, shoulders, neck, etc.) it’s also great for your metabolism. And it burns calories! Sure, it’s not like running a marathon or anything, but I’ll take all the help I can get in that area.

I’m going to quote this article to give you an idea of what I may be in store for…

This paper compared a range of activities (sitting motionless, sitting and fidgeting, standing, etc) against laying around like a zombie, to see how many extra calories are burned. At first, this paper made me angry. It was a well-conducted study, and showed that standing burns a measly 7.2 calories per hour more than sitting. Are you freaking kidding me, you stupid exercise physiologists?? Not so fast. Hate is the path to the dark side. So is not reading critically.

The above calculation is done when comparing sitting motionless to standing motionless. If you compare standing while fidgeting to sitting while fidgeting, you get 30 extra calories per hour. If you stand for half the workday, or 4 hours, you burn an extra 120 calories per day. Stretching that out to a full year of working on weekdays, with some vacation and sick time thrown in, and you get…an extra 30,000 calories per year! That amounts to 8.6 pounds of weight loss per year. If you want to check my calculations, email me and we can compare spreadsheets like proper nerds.
